Your Podcast for smarter and more professional English
Podcast for business English hello again my name is Nanette with me at Richard hi Elizabeth.hi how are you today how is it going I'm fine and you will I trying to be always fine so everything's okay, not too bad. So how would you ask for somebody's well-being. When phoning somebody for example you are forming a business person and you would say hello. I would you say how are you how is it going how is your family. How is business going. How would you ask for somebody's yeah stages of well-being so only I think again there's two different kinds of wage answers questions one. What is your personal relationship with the patient talking to. First of all if you have more business relationship business oriented relationship. These kind of questions. How are you are more in the American sense in American business and I want recycle you just answer with great thanks. If you have, on the other hand, have a more personal relationship to the person and a person's ask you, how are you and there is actual interest behind the question so it's not a rhetorical question, then you Coke can go into depth and onset into debt as and help hello how are you then maybe you use informal language. I was it going that you can understand depth and explain how your life is your family is what is going on and will what what I did and use in your life. So how would you do business in the business context. You're also have to remember that if you are just on business terms. The other person might be on time constraints so you can't just talk about your whole issues all all your news and that's what that's something you should also keep in mind so there's not much space for small talk, if you ask somebody how are you how is it going, etc. how would you formulate the question if instructor a thoughtful question or if you're really interested in what's going on this person's life and in the business setting. It's quite difficult to say in that theoretical way. I think you have to kind of anticipate the question first. Well, if the question asks you how are you and there's not a follow-up question that's most of most of the time. That's a good sign or ¢ for the presence really asking them at the hotel question. If there's a follow-up question has been after. How are you how is your wife then you get you have the get go to elaborate on your answers, but if there's only one question most of the time is just methodical question, so I think you have to anticipate that is not so for one fits all answer to this question, but I think you have to kind of use your own emotional intelligence and anticipate the question up one form of rule would be if there is a follow-up question after how are you, then you can elaborate steps. That's a good reply. So thank you very much and something else before we start with today's topic name the application and how to find a job in an international company, something that came across me yesterday was the description of an invoice so the word invoice when you're in the restaurant. For example, NGOs order the bill. You're saying the bill spreading business context you're talking about an invoice. Can you explain that there's a difference between these two freighters are words, yes special abilities more academic term. As you said, you can also use it in the restaurant so we kind of use it for all kind of trans-monetary transaction documents an invoice on the other hand, is a more official way of wealth calling above its most of the times, legal documents, and there are some laws banning, for example taxation, you're not your invoices. You're not allowed to delete them or edit them, so invoices are used for legal documents and official documents with both with the legal structure behind it and does. The tumbler is more generic term that also includes invoices okay, that helps a lot. Also, thank you very much Richard. So yes, today's episode is supposed to focus on how to get in contact with international companies. So if somebody wants to work for a company that is either in situated in Germany, but using international let's say international conversation so would be the company's language or if somebody wants to work up, wrote in a company where English is the company's language now. What's your opinion on that short somebody weighed until there is a drop off or or if somebody wants to apply initially what what rules or regulations, or do's and don'ts. Would you consider regarding this so in the general context we always wait until there is a job offer that we can see on the Internet or that we hear of from our networks and that American or Anglo-Saxon context, since they there are no dues and don'ts at the end of the day. Are you willing to get the job on that. And I think that this should stress the word willing to willing to in the sense of the Anglo-Saxon context people. The HR personnel likes application that are coming on their own initiative on the applicant's own initiative for HRS HR human resources executive. Whereas in Germany, the more bound to the order and where the anger Anglo-Saxon cultures more acceptable to applications on initiative yes okay so and then I prepare my CV and I prepare my qualifications or what I recorded video saying and hello I am just the man for you, it's me. I want to work for your company because I'm so delighted about what you do and I love your vision I want to fly to Mars with you Mr. Mr. musk or whatever. So which way off of contacting and application do you recommend the creative way traditional way, what is your opinion on that Richard first one I think what you first to describe in a more thinking or more fun where satirical way is in the apart from applying on for corporations, international corporations of corporate. There are also startups. As you mentioned before, this terrible fear, musk space X. I think there if you hi a highly highly regarded knowledge worker then you can use platforms like Twitter and actually send out video and say hey I'm here alone I there's no other way to contact you and these kind of applications these. I think Morton 21st century social networks. Applications are only four people well knowledge breakfast whether or not a lot of them so programmers and so so forth. But on the other hand, if you plan for international culprits that I think you should not that I think they should should stress they should not use these kinds of way of you are prepared to apply for the job they should use a traditional way of complying with the resume CV and cover letter. Whatever the combination because I'm in the experience. Sometimes I apply for jobs not because I'm looking for jobs I just want to see if I'm invited for interviews if they regard me as qualified and that was for example, the editor house corn is believed they were looking for somebody who creator language course and I just took my my smart phone. I recorded a video saying hey, here I am really motivated to do some work for you. I love languages and I recorded this video in seven different languages and apostate forward to the human resources and immediately they replied and invited me for a Skype interview. So would you say that thinking outside the box and maybe demonstrating some creativity can support the regular standards documents like CV and letter of replication here. I think what we are talking about is very special. When applying for a job you're always at the mercy of the HR person. So what is the HR personnel looking for in the applicant. If you are applying for a job as a set with video recording and the HR person is looking for somebody who's open can speak directly into the camera is not afraid of using new media tools is has enough qualification as is being able to speak seven different languages, then I think you should communicated in that way, then it could be support to the traditional way. But this story could be anecdotal. It can't apply it wouldn't apply for everybody. So while doing this, you have to understand that you have to be comfortable in front of the camera and knowing some sumps having some skills and being in using cameras and using social networks so I think it supportive to to the traditional application, but it is not an answer that all advised that I would give everybody okay so how to apply for a job in a traditional way. What is important for your cover letter and how to design your letter of replication. The application documents. This is what we're going to talk about in the next episode of this podcast for today Richard, I thank you very much for your insides for your important for your fonts in my questions, and I'm looking forward to talking to you next week. Again, thank you said bye-bye bye
